The drive is 99 miles, or about 2 hours. It is an easy drive, on the scenic Seward and Sterling Highways.
(Please be aware that if 5 or more cars are behind you, State Law requires that you pull over so they can pass)
- Take the Seward Hwy (Alaska Route 1/AK-1) south out of Anchorage. This will take past Girdwood, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and of spectacular spots along the Turnagain Arm. The speed limit is 55 and 65. The highway becomes very congested as people leave Anchorage to explore the Chugach Mountains and Kenai Peninsula.
- Girdwood is the last gas stop before Cooper Landing. When you get here you are about 1 hour and 15 min away.
- At the top of the Turnagain Mountain Pass there are pull outs with port-a-potty style bathrooms.
- More bathrooms are near the turnoff for Hope just before the big curved bridge. It’s a great spot to stop and take pictures.
- The next landmark is Summit Lake Lodge. It will be on your left side and they also have bathrooms and food. I recommend stopping for some ice cream or coffee.
- Turn right off the Seward Hwy onto the Sterling Hwy toward Kenai/Homer. (This is still Alaska Route 1 South/ AK-1 S – but locals refer to it by a different name.)
- You are about 11 miles away from Cooper Landing Lodge. Be aware that the speed limit changes often in this area, eventually slowing down to 35mph.
- On your left you will pass Sunrise Inn and café, and you will see the stunning Kenai Lake. It’s hard to keep your eyes on the road, while trying to look at the lake. WIldman’s Laundry and Liquor is on your right.
- The highway crosses the Kenai Lake/River, and we are a 1 mile farther down the road on the right (river side of the road), just past Grizzly Ridge Gas Station, TroutFitters, and River Haven Cabins. We have a small round wooden sign out by the road saying Cooper Landing Lodge in teal letters. There is a red Canoe leaning on the sign.
- If you see Cooper Landing Visitor Center, you are 100 feet past us.
