Make Amazing Father’s Day Fishing Memories

June evokes memories of barbecues, hamburgers, Father’s Day, road trips, and fishing. For our family, it marks the beginning of summer and the opening of the Kenai River, often coinciding with Father’s Day weekend. This time of year means packing overnight bags for a weekend trip to our cabin. We hand down waders and gear from those who have outgrown them to those who now need them, purchase new waders for the kids, sharpen hooks or buy new ones, untangle fishing lines, and ensure everyone has a pole. There’s always one that needs replacing. The preparation, though lengthy, is a cherished part of our June tradition.

Father's Day means Dad preparing fishing gear for kids at Russian River in Alaska.

Once on the river, we review the five types of Alaskan salmon using our hands. Each finger helps us remember a species and its nickname:

Thumb: “Thumb rhymes with chum,” perfect for Dog salmon.

Pointer finger: “Point to your eye,” which rhymes with sockeye. Poking your eye makes it red, just like the salmon.

Middle finger: The largest finger represents the king of salmon, the Chinook.

Ring finger: Think of silver rings for the CoHo or silver salmon.

Pinky: The smallest finger reminds us of the pink or humpy salmon.

Near Cooper Landing, we’ve caught Reds, Pinks, and Silvers. We’ve yet to catch a King, and Chum salmon do not inhabit the Upper Kenai and Russian Rivers.

Our most memorable Father’s Day weekends are when our kids limit out on the opening day, often while other anglers are still trying to catch their first fish.

Family went fishing with Dad on the Russian River in Alaska and caught six Salmon.

After a day of fishing on the Russian River, we return to the cabin, build a fire in the fire pit, and let the kids roast hot dogs, followed by marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. Balanced meals often result in soggy veggies and squashed fruit, so we keep our meals simple and hearty.

The kids present homemade Father’s Day gifts—usually a card, some hooks found along the river, and a really cool rock. These June memories are priceless.
